Searching for a Smoobu alternative usually means one specific thing has started to grate. That matters, because the right replacement depends entirely on which thing it is, and in a fair number of cases the honest answer is that switching your whole PMS is an expensive way to solve a narrow problem.
So start here: why are you looking?
First, name the actual reason
In practice hosts leave Smoobu for one of four reasons.
Channel sync. Airbnb and Booking.com get deep, real-time integration, but Vrbo, Google and HomeToGo connect over iCal, which can lag from minutes to a couple of hours. If Vrbo is a serious channel for you, this is a legitimate reason to move.
Listing content. Smoobu syncs availability and rates, but not photos, descriptions or house rules. Those stay in each OTA’s own dashboard. Across several channels that gets tedious fast.
Scale. Hosts pushing past roughly 50 units consistently report outgrowing the automation, team workflows and reporting.
Messaging. Automated messages go out through the Airbnb inbox or email, and guests miss them. This is the most common complaint, and it is also the one that does not require switching PMS. More on that below.
If your reason is price, stop here. Smoobu is repeatedly named as the cheapest genuinely capable channel manager, and almost everything below costs more. Check whether you are on the base plan paying roughly 0.9% per booking when the commission-free plan would be cheaper at your nightly rate.
Lodgify: for a real direct-booking website
If your gripe is that Smoobu’s booking site is merely functional, Lodgify is the upgrade. It began as a website builder in Barcelona in 2012 and still leads there: 20+ branded templates, a free custom domain with SSL, integrated payments, and a widget you can embed in an existing WordPress or Squarespace site.
Know the pricing trap before you move. The Basic and Starter tiers add roughly 1.9% on bookings processed through Lodgify, meaning exactly the direct bookings you switched for. Only Professional and Ultimate remove it, so budget for Professional or the move may not pay for itself.
Hostaway: for deeper sync and automation
Hostaway is the usual recommendation for hosts who have outgrown Smoobu but are nowhere near needing Guesty. It is stronger on real-time channel integration, automation rules and reporting, and it is built for operators running roughly 5 to 100 units.
The trade-offs are cost and commitment. It is meaningfully more expensive than Smoobu, pricing is quote-based rather than published, and it is typically sold on an annual contract. The onboarding is also heavier, so plan for a real migration rather than an afternoon.
Guesty: for portfolios and owners
If you have crossed into managing property for other people, Guesty is the category answer. It powers more than 500,000 listings across 100+ countries and offers native trust accounting, owner portals, an open API and a large integrations marketplace.
It is enterprise software with enterprise commitments. Only the Lite tier for 1 to 3 listings has public pricing and self-serve signup. Pro, covering 4 to 199 listings, is sales-gated with a custom quote, an annual contract and a one-time onboarding fee. The most common complaint in reviews is cost and quote opacity rather than the product itself.
Hospitable: for Airbnb-first simplicity
If most of your business is Airbnb and what you actually want is excellent messaging automation without a heavy platform, Hospitable is worth a look. It is messaging-led by design and hosts find it pleasant to run.
The trade-off is breadth. It is a lighter channel manager than Smoobu across non-Airbnb channels, so if Booking.com or Vrbo carry real volume for you, this is a sideways move rather than an upgrade.
Which one, by reason
| Your reason for leaving | Look at |
|---|---|
| Vrbo or Google sync lag | Hostaway |
| Weak direct-booking website | Lodgify, budget for Professional |
| Managing 50+ units | Hostaway or Guesty |
| Owner reporting and trust accounting | Guesty |
| Airbnb-only, want better messaging | Hospitable |
| Guests miss your messages | Stay, add a WhatsApp layer |
| Price | Stay, check your plan |
The case for staying
Here is the part most alternatives lists leave out. The single most common complaint that sends hosts looking is that guests miss messages, and no PMS on this page fixes it.
Every one of these tools, Smoobu included, sends automated guest messages through the Airbnb inbox or email. Guests do not open the Airbnb app, frequently have notifications off, and skim past email. That is why hosts who migrate for this reason often find the same problem waiting for them on the other side, having paid a migration and a higher subscription for the privilege.
It is a channel problem, not a PMS problem. Measured WhatsApp read rates run around 60 to 70%, roughly three times a typical email open rate, and guests reply in a thread they already use all day.
Notify My Guest connects to Smoobu in a few minutes and turns every confirmed booking into a personalized WhatsApp welcome from your own number, then covers every message after. If a guest’s number is saved without a country code it fixes it, and if a guest is not on WhatsApp it tells you so you can reach them another way. You keep the calendar and channels you already know, and the messages start landing.
The bottom line
Switch if your reason is structural: Vrbo sync, listing content, scale, or owner reporting. Those are real limits and no add-on fixes them. But if what actually prompted the search was guests missing check-in instructions, the cheaper and faster fix is to keep Smoobu and change the channel your messages go out on.
