Lodgify is a strong choice for hosts who want a real direct-booking website. What it does not have is a WhatsApp channel. Its automated guest messages go out over email, and for channel bookings through the OTA inbox, which are precisely the two places guests are least likely to read them.
If you have ever sent a careful check-in email from Lodgify and still taken a call at the door, this is why.
What Lodgify does and does not do
Lodgify handles the booking side well. Your website takes reservations, payments run through the integrated processor, the calendar syncs across channels, and you can schedule automated guest messages against booking events.
The composing and scheduling are fine. It is the delivery that leaks. Email open rates for transactional travel mail are unremarkable, and the OTA inbox depends on a guest opening an app they last touched when they booked, often with notifications off.
There is no setting inside Lodgify that changes this, because it is not a Lodgify defect. Every PMS in this category sends over the same two channels.
How the WhatsApp connection works
The layer sits after Lodgify rather than replacing anything in it.
Connect your Lodgify account. Notify My Guest reads confirmed bookings, which is where the guest’s name, property, dates and phone number come from.
Write one template. You compose your welcome once, with placeholders that fill in per guest. This is the same discipline you already use for Lodgify’s own automated messages.
Connect your WhatsApp number. Messages go out from your number, so the guest sees you and can reply in the thread.
Every confirmed booking triggers it. No copy-paste, no per-booking step.
Two details do more work than they sound like. Phone numbers arriving from booking channels are frequently missing a country code, and those get normalized rather than silently failing. And when a guest genuinely is not on WhatsApp, you are told, so you can fall back to email instead of believing they were informed.
For anything Lodgify emails you but does not expose as structured booking data, you can forward that email with the guest’s number in the subject and it goes out on WhatsApp as well. That covers the one-off cases: a late arrival, a maintenance heads-up, a change of parking instructions.
Why this matters more for direct bookings
Here is the part specific to Lodgify’s strength.
If you have built a direct-booking website, you have deliberately removed the OTA from the middle. That is the point, and it is worth real money. But it also removes the platform inbox that was quietly acting as your backup channel. An Airbnb guest who ignores your email might still see the message in the app. A guest who booked on your own Lodgify site has given you one email address typed into a checkout form, and nothing else.
So the channel you worked hardest to build is the one with the thinnest communication fallback. A mistyped address, an aggressive spam filter, or a guest who simply does not check email while travelling, and your check-in instructions reach nobody.
There is a second effect. Direct-booking guests have no Airbnb brand reassuring them the booking is real. A WhatsApp message from a human, arriving minutes after they pay, does more for confidence in a direct booking than anything else you can automate. The forums are consistent on this: the guests most likely to email asking “is this legitimate?” are the ones who booked outside a marketplace and then heard nothing.
What hosts send
Keep it to the messages that carry weight.
- A welcome the moment the booking confirms, which doubles as reassurance for direct bookings
- Check-in details and the door code, the day before arrival
- Late arrival instructions, sent when plans change rather than in advance
- A short mid-stay check on longer bookings
- Checkout reminder and review request
Measured WhatsApp read rates run around 60 to 70%, roughly three times a typical email open rate, and guests reply, which is the part that actually reduces phone calls.
Setting it up
You keep Lodgify exactly as it is. The website, the calendar, the channel sync and the payments do not change. What changes is that the message you already wrote arrives somewhere the guest reads it.
